Pokemon TCG Set Watch: What's Dropping This Quarter and What to Grab

By Colin Archer  ·  April 24, 2026

Alright, Pokemon players — pull up a chair. The back half of Q2 is shaping up to be one of the busiest Pokemon TCG stretches we’ve had in a minute, and I’ve been getting the same questions at the counter all week: what’s coming, when is it coming, and what should I actually be buying? Here’s the rundown from someone who’s opening packs, grading pulls at the table, and running our weekend events at the shop.

Chaos Rising Is the Headliner — May 22, 2026

This is the one everybody’s been asking about. Mega Evolution—Chaos Rising drops worldwide on May 22, and it’s a big deal for a couple of reasons. One, we’re officially deep into the Mega Evolution era the Pokemon TCG has been teasing since Ascended Heroes hit in January. Two, Chaos Rising is packing some of the flashiest art and most interesting mechanics the game has seen in a while.

Here’s what you’re chasing:

  • Mega Greninja ex, Mega Pyroar ex, Mega Floette ex, and Mega Dragalge ex — the marquee Mega Evolution cards. Floette is the villain of the set’s Lumiose City storyline, which is a fun touch if you follow the lore at all.
  • A brand-new rarity tier exclusive to Chaos Rising — the first three reveals are Pikachu, Mewtwo, and Mew with an opalescent, almost holographic sheen. That finish is going to print beautifully, and collectors are already circling.
  • Six Special Illustration Rares, eleven Illustration Rares, and eighteen Ultra Rares — a smaller English set, which means the hit density per box is actually pretty friendly compared to the bloated 200-plus card sets we’ve seen lately.

Prerelease: May 9–17

If you want hands on Chaos Rising before the official street date, prerelease events run May 9–17. Build & Battle Boxes come with four Chaos Rising packs plus a 40-card ready-to-play deck and one of four foil promo cards — Delphox, Ampharos, Crobat, or Goodra. I’ll tell you straight: prerelease events are the best deal in Pokemon right now. You get locked-in product value, a fun sealed format to play, and a promo card that tends to hold its value past release day.

First Partner Series 2 — June 19

If you missed the first First Partner collection, the sequel drops June 19. This one features the starters from Johto, Unova, and Galar — so we’re talking Chikoritas, Snivies, and Scorbunnies. The jumbo-card collections are less about competitive play and more about nostalgia and display. They move as gifts, and they move even better to lapsed Pokemon fans who bounced off the TCG in grade school and want something cool on the shelf. Grab one when it lands. Supply on the first First Partner collection got tight fast.

What We’re Still Sitting On From Q1

A quick check-in on the earlier 2026 releases so you know what’s still worth chasing:

  • Ascended Heroes (Jan 30) — still moving. This was the opening shot for Mega Evolution in English, and certain singles are actually climbing since Chaos Rising got announced. If you play competitively, the staples from this set aren’t going anywhere.
  • Perfect Order (March 27) — ETBs from this set have been popping off the shelf, especially for new players, because the trainer toolbox in here is genuinely strong. If you’re building decks, this is the set to crack.

Looking Ahead to Q3

I don’t want to bury the lede — September is going to be nuts. Storm Emerald is expected in August/September, and the 30th Anniversary Celebration set drops September 18 as an all-foil nostalgia release. That one is going to be the most-preordered Pokemon product of the year, hands down. If you’re a collector, start budgeting for it now. Seriously.

What to Actually Buy Right Now

Here’s my honest read, not hype — just what I’d tell a friend across the counter:

  • Playing at events? Jump into a Chaos Rising prerelease in May. The format is fresh, the promos are solid, and there’s no better way to learn a new set than Build & Battle.
  • Collecting? Snag a Chaos Rising booster bundle or ETB on release day. The new opalescent rarity tier is going to be the chase for the rest of 2026, and early product tends to have the best pull rates before print runs get tuned.
  • Gifting or casual? Wait for First Partner Series 2 in June, or grab a Perfect Order ETB now — the trainer toolkit in there is the best starter package we’ve seen in a while.
  • Investing for the long haul? Preorder the 30th Celebration product the second it goes live. Don’t hesitate. That’s the one.

Where to Get It

We’re carrying all the new Pokemon TCG sealed product at The Game Station — booster boxes, Elite Trainer Boxes, Build & Battle Boxes, collection boxes, the works. See y’all at prerelease.
