If you want to play Commander but you don't want to spend a weekend building a deck from scratch, a preconstructed deck — a "precon" — is the single best entry point in all of Magic: The Gathering. Open the box, shuffle, and play. That's it. I sell a lot of these at the counter, and the question I get most is simple: which ones are actually worth buying in 2026? Here's my ranked guide, straight from the store owner who's watched every one of these fly off the shelf (or sit and gather dust).
What Makes a Good Commander Precon in 2026
Before the rankings, a quick word on how I judge these. A great precon does three things: it plays well right out of the box against other precons, it's built around a commander you'll actually want to keep, and it gives you a clear path to upgrade later. Power ceiling matters less than consistency for new players. A deck that does its one thing every game beats a deck full of splashy bombs that never line up. Keep that in mind as you shop.
The Best Commander Precons to Buy Right Now, Ranked
1. Dance of the Elements (Ashling, the Limitless). If I could only stock one precon, this would be it. Ashling has quietly become one of the most popular commanders of the year, and the deck is loaded — Maelstrom Wanderer, Risen Reef, Yarok, the Desecrated. It's an elemental value engine that snowballs fast and stays fun across a lot of games. Great for a player who wants to grow into deckbuilding.
2. Eldrazi Unbound. This is the deck for the player who walks in and says "I want to cast the biggest thing at the table." Ramp into colossal threats, drop a board-warping Eldrazi, and watch the room groan. It's not subtle, but it's satisfying, and the reprints alone make it worth the shelf price.
3. Cavalry Charge. A tribal Knights deck that brought back the Eminence mechanic and plays aggressively — you'll be returning knights to the battlefield faster than opponents can answer them. If you like a proactive, board-focused game plan rather than durdling around, this is your pick.
4. Animated Army (Bello, Bard of the Brambles). Bello turns your artifacts and enchantments into indestructible 4/4s that draw you cards. In head-to-head precon slugfests it comes out on top more often than not, and it teaches you how to squeeze value out of permanents you already control. An underrated sleeper.
5. Eldrazi Incursion. The straightforward cousin to Eldrazi Unbound — swarm the board with giant creatures and overwhelm. Simple to pilot, hard to stop. A solid second deck to hand a friend so you both have something to play.
The New Sci-Fi Wave: Edge of Eternities
The Edge of Eternities Commander decks are worth calling out because they did something genuinely new: for the first time, Vehicles and the new Spacecraft cards can sit in the command zone as your commander. The two decks — World Shaper (built around "sacrifice your lands, grow back stronger" with Hearthhull, the Worldseed) and Counter Intelligence — each give you a Spacecraft commander and a creature commander option. Only two decklists this time, which keeps things simple, and they're priced far more reasonably than the Universes Beyond crossover decks. If you want something that feels fresh, start here.
What's Coming: Marvel Super Heroes
Looking ahead, the big one for Commander players is Marvel Super Heroes, arriving June 26, 2026, with four brand-new Commander precons. After the Spider-Man and Avatar sets skipped precons entirely — which frustrated a lot of my regulars — Mark Rosewater confirmed Marvel would deliver. These are Universes Beyond, so the flavor is pure Marvel while the mechanics stay standard Magic. If you've got a Marvel fan in your life who's Commander-curious, these are going to be the gateway decks of the year. We'll have them at the counter day one.
How to Choose the One That's Right for You
Here's my honest counter advice. If you're brand new, grab Dance of the Elements or Eldrazi Incursion — both are forgiving and fun. If you want to feel powerful immediately, Eldrazi Unbound. If you want to learn how to build value, Bello's Animated Army. And if you're chasing the newest tech, the Edge of Eternities Spacecraft decks are the most novel thing on the shelf. There's no wrong answer — a precon is meant to be a starting point, not a finish line.
